Olde pub? It’s like a pig sty!

3/ 9/2008

A BREWERY has been told to clean up a derelict pub which locals say has become a haven for burglars and drug pushers.

Ye Olde Blue Pig in Audenshaw, which dates back to the 1700s and is Grade Two listed, is in a sorry state of repair.

Residents living nearby claim it has become a magnet for thieves, drug dealers and fly tippers since it closed earlier this year. Metal shutters have been ripped off and the dilapidated pub, abandoned by Greene King brewery, has been broken into several times.

Travellers moved on to the car park a fortnight ago, but disappeared within 48 hours. Now the car park is littered with tyres, settees and rubbish with smashed mixer bottles strewn everywhere. Outdoor picnic tables have been snatched and metal fencing stolen.

Residents living nearby are disgusted and have demanded the brewery take action.

Catherine Woodcock, 41, said: "It’s a complete no-go area. The brewery have just let it go to rack and ruin. The place is a total eyesore."

Val Williams, who runs neighbouring business PAS Medical, added: "It’s very sad to see it in such a state. The car park used to be a bowling green at one time. It was a real hub of the community.  The pub itself dates back to the 1700s and is a listed building. Enforcement action needs to be taken."

Elaine Froggatt, of High Ash Grove, said: "I was walking past the other day and saw a couple of lads on the roof. They ducked down when they saw me. They were stealing the tiles or the lead. It’s terrible."

The pub closed suddenly in January just days after it was raided by a masked gang armed with lump hammers.

No one from Greene King brewery was available for comment.
