Dad ‘died’ after attack

29/10/2008

A ROCK fan ‘died’ several times after being attacked at a tribute gig to music legends U2.

Salesman Shaun Dickson’s heart stopped and was restarted by doctors as he underwent two emergency brain operations after the assault at a pub.

The family of the 40-year-old father-of-five from Glossop feared they would lose him. He was attacked on a night out to see the tribute band Achtung Baby with work colleagues in the Bridge Inn pub, Stalybridge.

Shaun was taken to a casualty unit for a check-up, but his condition deteriorated after he arrived home and he spent more than six weeks in hospital battling for his life.

He was punched once in the face, fell backwards and knocked unconscious when his head smashed against the floor.

Shaun said: "I can’t understand why someone tried to kill me."

The thug did not say a word before lashing out and police are making a fresh appeal for witnesses to the attack on 31 August.

The once bubbly family man is now a shadow of his former self. He is now easily confused and has a poor memory.

Officers are also trying to trace an off-duty paramedic who tended to Shaun in the bar. It is understood world champion boxer Ricky Hatton was also in the bar with friends enjoying a night out.

Shaun’s partner, Dawn Gallagher, 35, said he came home groggy after being discharged from A&E.

"He got into bed and just kept moaning all the time. When he got up we knew something was wrong and got him back to hospital. We thought we would lose him," she said.

"That one punch has devastated our family and nearly cost Shaun his life. Whoever did it is a danger to others and needs to be caught before they get the chance to destroy another life."

The attacker was white, about 30, of thin, build, with short brown hair and was wearing a green crew neck jumper.

Anyone with information can contact police Ashton CID on 856 9254 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
