Blast rocks Cavendish Mill

CAVENDISH Mill was rocked by a suspected gas blast last night (Wednesday), shortly after residents were allowed back inside following a gas scare.
Six people were taken to Tameside Hospital - where a man, 60, is in a serious condition with severe burns - after an explosion ripped through the block of flats in Cavendish Street, Ashton shortly before midnight.
The incident occurred about an hour after residents had been re-admitted to the converted mill, following an earlier evacuation due to a gas scare that afternoon.
The explosion ripped through the first floor of the flats and residents were led to safety at the Asda store, which faces the mill.
Residents were taken to council property to stay the evening.
Cavendish Street and a number of adjoining roads were closed off as fire, police and gas inspectors continued to check the are on Thursday.
