Blast from past!

18/12/2001

A TEAM of Prince's Trust Volunteers made a right royal discovery during a clean up operation in Hyde Park.

For among the usual collection of rotten leaves, litter and logs, they were amazed to find a metal plaque commemorating the 1935 jubilee of King George V.

Nicola Robinson, assistant team leader of the Groundwork Trust, was supervising the operation when the discovery was made last week.

She said: "The plaque was in a terrible state, but we could just make out the inscription which said it had been presented by Cllr Aspland Holland on June 9, 1935.

"I've no idea how it ended up in the stream, but it made a nice change from the usual rubbish we pull out of the water!"

The Hyde Park clean-up is now nearly complete, and the plaque has been handed over to Ashton's Portland Basin Museum for conservation.

Cllr John Sullivan, chairman of Hyde district assembly, said: "I'm delighted with this discovery - I really value this sort of link to the past."
