Bumps plea as speeding cars plague street

24/ 7/2002

A CAMPAIGNER is up in arms over cars speeding along a street - which he fears could cause death or serious injury.

Alan Yates said traffic calming would curb vehicles tearing along Stanhope Street, Audenshaw.

Mr Yates, chairman of East Audenshaw Residents Association, said the council rebuffed his plea because the street is a cul-de-sac.

"Yet Moorside Lane, which is a five-minute walk away, is also a cul-de-sac but that has five ramps on it. Is it because there are privately owned houses there?" he said.

"There are 250 kids around here with nowhere to play so they play in the streets."

Mr Yates, of Rowcon Close, has also asked for street lighting to the passageway in Stanhope Street but was refused because it is unadopted.

"It's an intimidating place because gangs of teenagers meet there. Audenshaw isn't getting a fair deal. I've asked for sports facilities but we haven't got them because Tameside Council can't afford them and Audenshaw isn't a deprived area, or so I've been told," he added.

"But what about the money being spent on football pitches and kids' play areas in Longdendale?"

A council spokeswoman said priority is given to areas surrounding schools and areas where accidents involving injury to people have occurred. Applications for street lighting are treated on merit and for unadopted highways applications would have to be made by the landlord who manages the stretch of road.
