TWO people have died and two have been injured in a weekend of pre-Christmas carnage on the roads.

A man and woman were killed in a horror smash on the M60 when the car they were travelling in was wrapped around a lamppost.

The pair, who have not been named, had just passed Denton Island and were heading towards Stockport when the accident happened.

The Peugeot 306 was travelling in the middle lane between junction 24 and 25 when the male driver tried to pull into the inside lane.

The car clipped the front of a Ford Mondeo and spun out of control.

Fire crews were called to the scene at 8.10pm.

They found a baby seat in the back of the car and used cutting equipment to strip down the wreckage in a search for any child passengers but no one was found. The driver of the Ford Mondeo was not injured.

Fire crews were also called to two other collisions over the weekend.

On Saturday afternoon one woman was taken to hospital after she was involved in an accident where the other driver failed to stop.

The woman had been driving along Wakefield Road in Stalybridge at 3.45pm when her car was in collision with another vehicle.

She was taken to hospital with suspected neck injuries but the driver of the other vehicle fled the scene.

And on Sunday a man had to be cut free from his car after a collision with another vehicle in Stockport Road, Hattersley.

Fire crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the driver, who is believed to have suffered lower back injuries in the smash.
A female passenger and the driver and passenger of the second car escaped unharmed, according to fire chiefs.
