Drink drive figures double

POLICE patrolling Glossopdale are despondent that drink drive levels rose dramatically over the seasonal period.
Derbyshire Police, the first force to announce its results,
found the percentage of positive tests to negative ones had nearly
doubled compared with Christmas 2001.
There were 143 drivers who tested positive compared with 113 last
year and 5,135 negative tests compared with 7,696 in 2001, a leap
from 1.4 to 2.7 per cent.
Figures for tests after accidents show 23 people were positive
compared with 16 in 2001 and 248 negative, compared with 365 the
same time last year, a rise from 4.4 to 8.5 per cent.
Chief Insp Nick Jones, said: "The percentage of people giving
positive tests is higher than in previous years, but we believe
that is because we are targeting offenders.
"We are concerned about the number of positive tests after
collisions. This year eight per cent of drivers involved in crashes
tested positive, nearly twice the number who failed the test last
year.
"The number of positive tests given after collisions is a stark
reminder of just how dangerous it is to drink and drive."
The Derbyshire figures also show that since their campaign started
on December 18, police have received more than 130 calls from the
public reporting drivers they suspect of breaking the law.
Chief Insp Jones added: "Many of the calls we received were from
people who are fed up seeing others drinking and driving day after
day, putting lives at risk.''
