A piece of cake for Suzanne

GETTING to the final is the icing on the cake for Suzanne.

Suzanne Ratcliffe of Stalyhill Drive, Stalybridge, has reached the finals of the celebration cake maker of the year in the 2003 baking industry awards.

The 28-year-old physiology and pharmacology graduate beat off hundreds of other entries to get through to the final three of the category which takes place next month.

Suzanne has won an all expenses paid trip to London's Grosvenor house hotel on Park Lane for the glamorous awards evening on 22 September.

Suzanne, who works for her mother and father at Trifles Ltd on Market Avenue in Ashton, said: "I had to design a cake with a Christmas theme.

"I did mine like an old fashioned story book with a jelly Father Christmas and drunk reindeers. Then the judges came to the shop and asked me a few questions."

Suzanne, who used to attend Copley High School, has worked at her parents' cake shop for eight years since graduating from the University of Central Lancashire and has never won an award of this kind before.

She said: "I stepped in to help out when they were short staffed when I left uni and just stayed on. It's what I enjoy and I believe that's far more important."
