Swapping one service for another

ONE army officer decided he really wanted to alter his life and has just taken the reins as new vicar in Mottram.
Reverend Philip Burrows, 44, has taken the position at St Michael and All Angels in Mottram and St Mary Magdalene in Broadbottom.
He said: "When I went off to university my mum died and I became a Christian at the age of 18. But, I wanted to be in the army and served as a regular infantry officer for ten years. I visited all the usual places, northern Ireland, Germany and Cyprus."
After serving in the army, Rev Burrows took up the job as a vicar and arrived in Tameside last month following a spell at Emanuelle Church in Cheadle.
The husband and father-of-four is a Tameside man. He was born in Hyde and went to Stockport Grammar School before heading to Birmingham University to study for a degree in chemistry.
He said: "I didn't want a nine to five job, that's why I joined the army. My job now is hardly nine to five either! I want to proclaim the message of God. Churches can be out of date and living in the past but I want to show church is interesting. We want church to be a warm, welcoming place."
