Cancer dad's wedding vow

A MAN made it to his son's wedding even though he was too weak to walk because of cancer.
Now with the first anniversary of the wedding approaching on Sunday, his daughter-in-law wants to thank Macmillan nurses for their help in making her big day even more special.
Former bus driver and keen bowler Philip Davies, formerly of Bengal Square, Ashton, died of lung and bone cancer just two months after the wedding of son Paul, 35, and Carol Anne Gregor at St John's CofE church in Dukinfield.
Carol Anne is a staff nurse at Christie's and is well aware of the toll cancer takes. She said: "I phoned Tameside Hospital the morning of the wedding and did not know if he would make it as he was so ill. The first I knew he was coming was when I saw him in church. The Macmillan Fund supplied the ambulance, staff and everything and even though it was a nurse's day off she insisted on going to the church and looking after him.
"He was at the wedding reception for about half-an-hour but was not strong enough to stay the full day. He made the effort to wear half of the wedding hire suit - waist coat, shirt and cravat - and was full of life and said he'd have got me on the dance floor if he could."
Carol Anne, 33, of Hawthorn Drive, Stalybridge, added: "My own father Frank Gregory died of cancer in November 1998 when I was a student nurse, so it was a quite a traumatic run-up to the wedding as my father-in-law's cancer spread at the same speed as my father's. Macmillan nurses do a wonderful job, they are so dedicated to caring and put their heart and soul into it. But they need funding from the public to carry on all their good work."
