Cull farmer sparked armed police unit

25/ 9/2003

ARMED police swooped on a farm following reports of gunfire - to find a farmer culling animals.

Worried neighbours had heard gunshots at the farm in the Stalybridge area and contacted police, who sent in the tactical aid unit.

In the light of the scare, police are now asking farmers to let them know about culling practices.

The farmer had begun culling his animals as part of the control process - in regulation with the Agricultural and Pests Act.

Supt Zoe Hamilton said that in the hope of preventing similar incidents farmers can contact her by letter, or by phoning the area operations room to warn them that culling is about to take place.

She added that although police would still need to respond where there is a threat to life or property, any reports of gunfire can be dealt with accordingly.

Anyone who needs to tell police about culling taking place on their farm should phone 872 5050 and ask for the area operations room.
