Eric’s never brassed off

ERIC Parkin doesn't blow his own trumpet, but he may have to now he's been given a special achievement award.

The brass band enthusiast was given the honour for 40 years of dedication to Stalybridge brass band.

At the age of 90, Eric still makes daily trips to the world's oldest brass band's headquarters and was secretary until five years ago.

He's also taken the band to Holland on four occasions and brought home four gold medals in world music contests. "The band has been in existence since 1809. In six years time this will mean 200 years of dedication by a lot of people. Long may it continue," said Eric, of Church Walk, Ridge Hill.

"We've raised thousands of pounds for charities over the years. Sometimes they'll come to us and say: Can you put on a concert for us to raise money? and they'll only have £15, it costs us £100 to rehearse with a conducter. I actually got an award from the mayor in 1987 for services to the community.

"May I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help, the public as well as the players."

Councillor Charles Meredith nominated Eric for the award. He said: "Eric really has been the heart and soul of the band. Although he's never played in it he is the backbone. His contribution to the band's success has been outstanding."

Stalybridge District Assembly chairman, Councillor Kevin Welsh, is planning to announce a £3,000 sponsorship deal for the band at the next meeting on 19 November. However, they are still appealing for a permanent sponsor.

Eric said: "The £3,000 will last about three months. We were sponsored by Brother for nine years and really need a regular sponsor."
