Meal card will fight the flab

A SCHOOL'S new swipecard technology is set to help in the battle to stem the tide of childhood obesity.

From January the concept of dinner money takes on a whole new meaning at Stamford High School. Its cashless cafeteria scheme will enable students at the Ashton school to pay a one-off weekly fee for swipecards, which can then be used to pay for school lunches every day.

One of the benefits will be that parents can be sure they are paying for a nutritious dinner for their child, rather than youngsters being tempted to buy fattening crisps and sweets.

The system database will also allow parents to monitor their child's diet. Should a pupil require a specialist diet, such as one low in fat, particular foods can be blocked, which will be highlighted via the card at the checkout.

Deputy headteacher Dave Watson said: "It is a really good idea and ideal for schools. The students can enjoy their lunch without worrying about whether they have enough money in their pockets and parents will be safe in the knowledge that they can keep an eye on exactly what their children are eating - without even being there!

"The scheme is expected to be a huge success with everyone concerned and I'm sure that many other schools in the area will soon follow suit."
