Worming our way into history books

30/12/2003

TAMESIDE bookworms topped the polls for the highest number of voters in the BBC's Big Read campaign.

Nearly 900 people voted from Ashton's Central Library making it the top-scoring library in country.

And to mark the achievement the BBC has donated one of the show's mascots, a four-foot worm, to the library.

During the competition staff saw the demand for books on the BBC's list rise sharply.

Borough librarian Catherine Simensky said: "Lending figures for the top 21 nationally show a 56 per cent increase over the last year.

"And readers' tastes have produced the top five although in a slightly different order. Although in Tameside we've seen lending figures for all books continue to rise, bucking the national downward trend."
