'Bring it back on track' call

28/ 7/2004

TAMESIDE Council executive leader, Councillor Roy Oldham, said: "I was extremely disappointed with the statement in the transport white paper last week announcing that funding for the Tameside Metrolink extension had been stopped.

"The expected transport and economic benefits to the borough are considerable and should not be lost. The decision taken seems even more incredible when you consider all the money already spent in advance of the main work.

"Given that the economic case for the new route via Droylsden to Ashton has been thoroughly demonstrated and accepted to be of the highest order, and a favourable cost benefit return has been identified for Metrolink phases three as a whole, I believe that every effort should be made to reverse this decision and secure the necessary funding required to complete the phase three project.

"We will do our up most to make sure this hugely beneficial project is brought back on track."
