New bid for line

4/ 8/2004

TRANSPORT leaders have been dealt a devastating blow in their fight to thrash out a new deal with the government on Metrolink - but they have vowed to fight on tooth and nail.

They travelled to London for a summit meeting with senior civil servants from the Department for Transport.

The bosses had hoped to get some positive encouragement before putting in a new bid for the Metrolink's expansion. But during heated discussions they were told there was little chance of Transport Secretary Alistair Darling reversing his decision not to fund new lines.

It is understood the Department for Transport effectively sees no future for light rail, despite the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive submitting figures which show Metrolink is more economic than other forms of public transport.

While 25 per cent of the original funding was due to come from local authorities and businesses, the GMPTE is now willing to come up with a higher local contribution to secure the scheme's future.
