‘Metrolink loss is devastating’

27/ 8/2004

A DISABILITY rights campaigner says losing the Metrolink would be a devastating blow to disabled people.

Wheelchair-bound Stuart Eyres, a member of Droylsden District Assembly Committee, is currently working on a video with Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive promoting accessible transport on buses, trains and trams.

"It's like having a knife in your heart -it's that kind of devastation," he said. "It's unreal to hear that something you have been looking forward to that much and for that long is being cancelled."

He added: "Everyone can get on to a Metro whether it's someone in a wheelchair or mums struggling with prams and bags of shopping. I think it's appalling when people are sat down and just watch you struggle.

"The Metro means we can get on and off easily and don't have to rely on others to help us or worry about finding a parking space. It would make a real difference to people's independence."

The video is due to hit television screens next month and it's hoped will highlight the benefits of the Metro for disabled people.

GMPTE is looking for up to 400 volunteers to sign up to its Access and Disability panel. The panel is regularly consulted to get a range of views on transport issues and aims to ensure the needs of disabled travellers are considered.

Michael Renshaw, of GMPTE, said: "Disabled people are the experts in identifying barriers to using public transport and welcoming new volunteers will ensure the problems will be highlighted."

Anyone interested in joining should call 242 6777 or download an application form from www.gmpte.com/consult
