Betrayal

8/ 9/2004

ASHTON MP David Heyes believes his government has betrayed the people of Tameside over Metrolink.

Speaking at the rally, Mr Heyes said he is straining at the leash to go back into Parliament and tackle transport minister Alistair Darling.

He said: "We have a number of meetings scheduled with the transport minister. It will be an uphill battle, but I am confident a solution will be found."

Councillor Kieran Quinn said: "Rest assured, the government will crack first because the people of Tameside won't."

Councillor Alan Whitehead, transport chief, said: "It's disgraceful that we should even be holding an event like this. But today just demonstrates the depth of feeling against this decision."

James Purnell, Stalybridge and Hyde MP, said: "Make no mistake, this decision was totally wrong. Metrolink is vital for the whole of Tameside, not just Ashton and Droylsden. I'm positive we will succeed."
