Police stop ‘hoodie’ Hatton in training for big fight

POLICE stopped Manchester boxer Ricky Hatton during a 2am training run - because they thought he was a hooded thug.

Ricky, 26, said he was running down Stockport Old Road near his home in Hattersley when the incident happened.

Police forces have said they will check on so-called 'hoodies' - youths wearing hoods - and that's how the mistake occurred.

The officers apologised when they realised it was Ricky preparing for his early morning fight at the Manchester Evening News Arena on Sunday against Kostya Tszyu, the Australia-based Russian who is the IBF world light-welterweight champion.

Ricky said: "The police pulled me up because I had my hood up and I was training away at about 2.30am. I had my bob hat on and my hood and they pulled me up.

"As soon as I turned around they noticed who I was.

"They said 'We should have known it was you, Ricky. What other idiot would be running at two in the morning?'"

Ricky said that he had changed his training regime so he would be ready for Sunday's 2am fight, which is being broadcast in America.

"Normally I get up at 8.30am and I train at 12 or 12.30pm and go running at 7.30pm or eight in the evening," he said.

"Now instead of getting up at eight, I get up at half one. I'm in the gym at tea-time and I knock off at four or five o'clock in the morning. All I have done is move my day along."

Ricky, considered an underdog for Sunday despite 38 straight professional wins, said that at first he found the new early-morning training regime difficult to handle, with foxes running across his path and bats sweeping down.

He said: "I've sort of got used to it now and to be honest I've enjoyed it."

Dear Champ: Congratulation , you're a great one. I watched every one of your fights that were broadcasted in America and back then I still couldn't let myself be drawn into 'fan fever' because of the size of the crowds you drew and admit you are a great one.

Everyone I know in New York, North Carolina, Florida are saying the same thing: He reminds me of ROCKY. Stay away from Thomas Hearns aka 'the hitman' and use 'the rock', be unique. Like the not so great Sugar Ray Leonard latched on to the great one sugar ray robinson. Thomas Hearns is not so great either. But the day you beat Freddie Pendleton, vince philips, ben tackie, my thoughts brought me back to the days of 'Rocky'. Now, I must say: I hated to see you guys fight because I thought you both were great and I would be heartbroken to see one win. I'd rather the both of you beat all comers and then fight. I'm 65 years old and a retired from NYPD where I was injured three times during the riots of the 60s and 70s. I was privileged to see live all the great fights. I've studied the game since 1949 when I was a kid when my family had the one of first TVs that went on the market. I have been comparing you and Rocky in my mind; both undefeated ; both with great punches in either hand; both with chins of granite; both of you are swarmers never given your opponent breathing room; both of you throwing as many as 80 to 100 punches a round; both never running out of gas; when hit your head clears straight away; both of you admit when interviewed that you were hurt in the fight. I remember Joe Louis saying years later after his career was over that "he could not have never beaten 'Rocky' because he crowded me. No one knew this; not even my trainers." Now if the word got out back then, Joe would been faced with swarmers every day and looking bad doing so.

You picked a great fighter in Duran that was you inspiration but you fight like Rocky and if they hear you say Rocky was also my hero, You'll wrap up the sleeping white American hungry for champion hungry for a white champion ..that you would not only pack Madison Square Gardens but you'll fill Yankee stadium. Just think about it. MONEY is the name of the game along with FAME.If you stay honest as rocky did, and don't brag the American fans will love you. If you look out in the crowds in America you still all pale faces waiting for the great white hope. Ali was so so, fast and stylish but 's it, I proved that in a home made DVD which I sent free to all my old friends. They were in awe. The entire western media is left wing liberals and they will not give a white man a break no matter how great he is. So in closing I expect to see you take on and annihilate , gatti (I like gatti also) , may weather (needs to be taught a lesson) , vivian harris (needs to be dumped), Cotto. I really want you to eradicate Zab Judah (the mouth, I remember him saying Tszyu never hurt him while falling all over the place and then choking the referee) . I still remain loyal to you and Kostya Tszyu and pray you both never get hurt seriously. Frank Gilleeny
