Ricky’s boxing clever outside the ring

WORLD champion boxer Ricky Hatton is aiming to deliver a dig in the ribs to anyone trying to cash in on his fame - by trademarking his name.

The Hyde fighter wants to protect his money-spinning image rights by registering it for a wide variety of goods from balloons to boxing gloves.

If successful the light-welterweight champ's name could be found on a full range of boxing gear, sportswear, DVDs and computer games.

And according to the list, it seems Hatton is keen to pummel the market by applying to use his name on products as diverse as bleach, sunglasses and Christmas decorations.

The 27-year-old 'Hitman' is also keen to show his sensitive side by grabbing a monopoly on grooming products such as styling gel, moisturisers and after-shave balms.

The application has been made by Punch Promotions Ltd, of Melbourne House, Grosvenor Square, Stalybridge, the company launched and run by his dad Ray.

The legal move comes as Hatton prepares for another court battle - against former promoter Frank Warren over a contract wrangle.

Anyone who objects to Hatton's bid has three months to lodge objections with the Trademarks Registry. After that a trademark judge will decide whether his name meets the legal criteria to be registered.

If his bid is rubber-stamped, he would stand to gain thousands of pounds in merchandising rights.

So next time boxing's brightest hope appears in the Advertiser it could be Ricky Hatton™.
