Save our hospital services

15/ 2/2006

MUMS and dads, grannies and grand-dads, aunts, uncles, friends and distant cousins - your baby unit needs you!

Without the support of Tamesiders, there is a chance that Tameside Hospital could lose its outstanding children's and maternity services in a region-wide NHS shake-up.

Which is why the Advertiser is teaming up with the hospital to make sure this doesn't happen.

A public consultation is looking at the best way to streamline maternity, neonatal and paediatric services from 14 to at most eight sites. This could mean that in the future babies would no longer be born in Tameside but instead in either Stockport or Manchester.

NHS chiefs say this is the only way to meet modern child health needs and provide specialist care for very sick babies.

Four options have been put forward for reform. Consultants have recommended the "preferred" option A which sees inpatient paediatric and obstetric sites kept at:
- Tameside
- Wigan's Royal Albert Edward
- Royal Bolton
- Royal Oldham
- Manchester's St Mary's
- Stockport's Stepping Hill
- Wythenshawe
- North Manchester

Neonatal intensive care units would be based at St Mary's, Oldham and Bolton.

Losing the Tameside unit would have a knock-on effect on other services with links to it, such as gynaecology, as well as endangering the plan to turn the hospital into a foundation hospital.

While hospital bosses are confident that Tameside will not lose out, they are calling on residents to show support for maternity and young people's services.

I am new to the area and have not had cause to actually use the maternity unit, but it seems crazy to me that when its already serving a large population and doing so very well, that such a facility could be taken away or managed differently. Don't try and fix what ain't broken!
