Hospital campaign is simply Streets ahead

1/ 3/2006

FORMER Corrie landlord Roy Barraclough has labelled the possible axing of Tameside's maternity services "outrageous".

The star of stage and screen, most famous as curmudgeonly Alec Gilroy in Coronation Street and as Les Dawson's sidekick, has lived in Tameside for 25 years.

He was honoured in the New Year with an MBE for his work in drama and for charities around Manchester - he is patron of Willow Wood Hospice.

Having visited friends at the unit, he has seen the expertise and caring professionalism of the staff first hand.

Adding his name to our petition, he said: "I think it's an outrageous cost-cutting exercise and doing a massive disservice to the community. It's important that we keep our services local.

"Emergency maternity cases shouldn't be expected to traverse half of Cheshire to find treatment. I can only hope that this appeal makes a difference."

In just two weeks more than 5,000 readers have signed our Save It petition.

We still need your support to boost the campaign. You can do this any number of ways - fill out the coupon in the Advertiser, or why not start up a petition in your neighbourhood and send it to us at the address below?

And we still want to hear your stories so keep those calls and letters coming.

Send petitions and stories to the Advertiser, 35-37 Booth Street, Ashton, Lancashire OL6 7LB.

Or you can write direct to the Strategic Health Authority at FREEPOST, Making It Better, email consultation.response@gmsha.nhs.uk or call 0800 587 2901.

As a former Ashtonian who was born at Tameside Hospital, I was appalled to read about the possible closure of its Maternity services.

I, therefore, wish your campaign to keep these services going a 100% success.

Keep up the good work!
