MP’s respect for Innocent protest

MP GEORGE Galloway has joined Tameside's newly-appointed mayor as the latest supporter of a teacher who is seeking asylum in Tameside after being tortured in his home country.

Innocent Nkung was arrested for agitating for the right to vote in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He was given the 'option' of a 15-year jail term or 'volunteering' for Secret Service Training. After he refused to kill others as part of this 'training', he was incarcerated in the notorious Buluwo prison, where he was tortured.

Innocent has been seeking asylum in Ashton since he escaped from the Congo last year and has received support from local MP David Heyes.

RESPECT party MP, Mr Galloway, was approached by one of Innocent's campaigners and agreed to sign his petition.

Campaigner Nigel Rolland said: "He also said he had heard of Innocent's case and knew about the BBC Report on the fate of previously-returned failed asylum seekers to the DRC."

New mayor of Tameside, Councillor Sean Parker-Perry, said: "I truly believe we should uphold international law. People who seek asylum with us should be offered protection. I have great concerns about anybody being sent back to the Democratic Republic of Congo when there's such massive abuse of human rights," he said.

"The main issue is that the British government needs to resolve, through peacekeeping, the issues in the DRC.

"People like Innocent don't want to be here, they want to be in their own country with their family. I do not believe people like Innocent are economic migrants, they are here because they fear for their lives."

The deportation of this man would be a crime in itself, this man is a much needed asset in our schools and his education and abilities would go a long way in our "yob" culture. This man has proven himself to be law abiding, compassionate and to let him slip through the fingers of our Government would be a crying shame.
