Volunteers say no to closure

15/ 3/2006

VOLUNTARY group leaders have said services for women and children must stay at the heart of the community.

Tameside Third Sector Coalition chief Moira Cunningham said axing Tameside's children's and maternity services would cause trouble and hardship to poor families, especially single parents.

She added: "Think of a situation where a woman had to travel as far afield as Oldham, Stepping Hill or Central Manchester hospitals to deliver her baby.

"This could turn what should be a wonderful and joyful experience into a nightmare of anxiety as she crawls through traffic jams in labour. And how easy is it going to be for the rest of the family to get there, when the journey will in itself be such a nightmare? We would certainly question how much, in society as a whole, we value our children and their mothers."

T3SC supports community groups in Tameside and will send a petition to any group or individual who calls them on 339 4985.
