Medics are to thank for their fantastic care

TAMESIDE Hospital holds a special place in the hearts of one family.

For without the care of midwives and maternity staff, Annetta Waine's daughter and her two grandsons wouldn't be here.

Daughter Jacqueline was four weeks premature and one of the first babies born at the maternity unit.

She was given only a 40 per cent chance of survival, but thanks to 'fantastic care' from medics, the tot beat the odds and is now a healthy 34-year-old.

Annetta, of Birch Street, Ashton, said: "I'd already lost a baby prior to Jacqueline being born. If she'd had to travel somewhere else, I might have lost her too. It serves such a wide community and it's vital, especially for people who don't have transport."

Annetta's eldest daughter Samantha also has a reason - or two - to thank our maternity services.

Son Matthew, aged eight, was born by emergency Caesarean after midwives couldn't find his heartbeat. The same thing happened with her second son Luke.

"I honestly don't know what I'd have done if I'd had to travel to another hospital and I can't believe what they're thinking of doing," she said.
