Joining the fight to save Innocent

A POPULAR folk musician will be voicing his support for an asylum seeker's right to stay in Tameside during a free social event.

Aidan Jolly, who released his album 'System Fault' last year, will be performing at an event where members of the public are invited to meet Congolese asylum seeker Innocent Nkung.

The event, which will include traditional Congolese food and drinks and live music sessions will be held on Saturday, 25 March at Ashton Baptist church, Welbeck Street from 6.30pm.

Mr Jolly, who recently visited El Salvador to work with local musicians, says he takes inspiration from the worldwide struggles of ordinary people for social justice in his music.

He is urging the public to attend the event and get to know a man who has worked tirelessly as a volunteer in the area.

"I support the right of anybody who's faced with persecution and I think the contribution of people who've come to this country throughout history is immense," said the Mossley musician

"I've done some research into the Congo and the war there has claimed almost 5m lives. The reason there is such a problem is because they are very rich in resources, like diamonds. These demands on the natural resources find their way into the global market and into our lives and that's why I think we have a duty to help people like Innocent."
