Crackdown to tackle troublesome families

TROUBLE-causing families will be targeted as part of a new drive to tackle anti-social behaviour in Tameside.

Police, probation and social services will draw up a hit-list of those that cause the most misery for their neighbours.

Cash will then be used to set up a family intervention project for each in a bid to mend their ways.

Project chiefs claim the main causes of poor behaviour include poor health, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, unemployment and debt.

Seventeen families will benefit after New Charter became one of five housing associations to get £50,000 from the pot, funded by the Housing Corporation.

Tony Powell, New Charter tenancy director, said: "We work in an area that is no worse and no better for anti-social families, but we have a justifiable reputation for tackling such problems.

"Most of our tenants will be delighted that we are pursuing another way of dealing with the problems that a few families create."

Jon Rouse, chief executive of the Housing Corporation, said: "Through a wide range of projects that deal with issues ranging from health and addiction to education and employment, we hope to tackle the prevention of anti-social behaviour.

"This is about working in partnership with families to work through these problems and get to the root of these challenges.

"I look forward to seeing how the New Charter project develops."
