Furniture store is investigated

20/12/2006

TRADING standards are investigating after an Ashton furniture firm shut its doors without notice.

Homestyle Furniture Show on Cavendish Street shut up shop on Friday.

According to a notice put up outside the premises earlier this week, it will re-open tomorrow (Friday).

Owner Chris Grundy has promised orders will be delivered by Saturday at the latest.

But concerned customers who paid cash in advance and were promised delivery of furniture say it has ruined their plans for Christmas.

Mum-of-two Leanne Wall was told her £800 sofa would be delivered on Friday. The family is being forced to sit on cushions.

Leanne, of Brushes Estate, Stalybridge, said: "My kids said, instead of buying them presents, to save up for another sofa. It's really upsetting, especially this near Christmas."

The Advertiser was contacted by several other customers in a similar situation.

Karen and George Novak, of Sandringham Avenue, Audenshaw, paid £800 for a new leather settee.

"We went down on Sunday and there were about 20 people like us who had been ringing and ringing and couldn't get through, so were just turning up," she said.

The Advertiser contacted Mr Grundy on Tuesday.

He said: "This will be sorted on Friday or Saturday. It's a family bereavement and I do apologise to customers. Everybody will be totally satisfied."

Councillor Catherine Piddington said: "With the police, we are trying to establish the company's trading position. A notice on the building says business will resume as normal on 22 December, which the owner has phoned to confirm.

"If the business does not continue after Friday, customers who have purchased goods or paid deposits by credit cards will be able to make a claim against the credit card company if they don't get their goods.

"Customers who have paid by cash are in a more difficult position and until we have established whether the company is still trading or they come forward with a statement of their current trading position, we are unable to advise."

Anyone who has paid money to the company and not had their goods should contact trading standards on 342 3565 until tomorrow (Friday).
