Stabbed officer’s service of thanks

Adam Derbyshire

WEEKS ago he was fighting for his life, but on Sunday Gary Etchells had the chance to say thank you to the people who helped him pull through.

The popular police community support officer was stabbed in the neck on duty in December.

After receiving dozens of cards and get well soon messages, he decided to arrange a service of thanks to show his gratitude to all the wellwishers for their support.

It took place at St George's Church, Church Walk, Stalybridge less than 200 yards from where he was attacked.

Mr Etchells, 47, was stabbed while assisting bailiffs and housing association officials with an eviction. The dad-of-four from Simmondley, Glossop underwent two operations in Tameside Hospital and needed 11 litres of blood.

The attack was the most serious involving a PCSO since they went on patrol in England and Wales four years ago but he hopes to be back at work by the end of April.

Mr Etchells gave a reading during the service along with the Rev Ian Stubbs, borough Mayor Councillor Margaret Sidebottom and Tameside's chief superintendent Steven Hartley.

Chief Supt Hartley said: "My overwhelming feeling was how much of an impact Gary has in the community.

"It was a Sunday afternoon and there were more than 100 people there so it just shows how popular he is.

"The PCSOs do a vital job in reassuring people and they are our eyes and ears. We are looking forward to welcoming him back whenever he is ready."
