Area all set for ‘des res’ status

IT'S time to play the regeneration game in Hattersley after developers were chosen to breathe new life into huge chunks of the area.

The £250m vision will transform the 1960s overspill into a "highly desirable" community with more than 800 new private homes.

It will boast a new district centre, shops, businesses and community services along with improved roads, parking and public space.

MP Ruth Kelly, communities secretary, has already hailed Hattersley as an "exemplar" among rebirth schemes.

Regeneration chiefs English Partnerships have instructed leading developers to transform it into "one of the most desirable addresses in the area" over the next 12 years. Work is set to begin in the next few months.

Barratts and Artisan will be in charge of residential properties while the CTP consortium will take charge of commercial development.

Similarly, social landlord Peak Valley Housing Association is spending £40m upgrading and improving its stock in a bid to stem Hattersley's falling population.

Council leader Roy Oldham said: "There has been significant investment and improvement in public services, with the area now served by top performing primary schools and two of the borough's best high schools, Alder and Longdendale. The opportunity developed by the council and its partners is fantastic."

Paul Spooner, English Partnerships regional director, said: "With this significant appointment, we can now be confident that Hattersley will become a model of sustainable regeneration."

Mike Creamer, chief executive of Contour Housing Group, said: "Contour's involvement was the catalyst for this ground-breaking project which will see Hattersley reach its tremendous potential.

"Peak Valley is spending £40m, which has already resulted in a substantial demand to live in the area.

"It's nestled on the edge of countryside and has excellent transport links."

How fantastic!!! Lets make the area better and don't bother thinking about those people like my parents who have lost their home in the process. I grew up on that estate and have seen it become worse and worse- who in their right mind would want to spend thousands on a house on an estate where the decent people are out numbered by those who are intent on making the lives of their neighbours unbearable. Until someone stands up to these people nothing will ever change irrespective of how much money is ploughed into it.
