Racist vandals target cabbie

A CAB driver has been forced off the road by racists.

Father-of-four Maqsood Ahmed is facing a bill of more than £1,000 after racist grafitti was scratched all over his black Hackney cab.

The vandals also scratched racist abuse into the door of his cab.

The attack took place when the cab was parked outside Mr Ahmed's Marlborough Street, Ashton home overnight on Sunday.

"I was about to take my son to school on Monday morning when he noticed it," said Mr Ahmed, who has been a taxi driver for 14 years.

"I can't drive it now. As a public vehicle I'm not allowed to drive around with such offensive comments on and not only that - I'd be embarrassed to pull up at a rank with that written on it."

Mr Ahmed says the vandalism is just the latest in a spate of attacks on his family, who have lived in Ashton for 15 years. Mr Ahmed's wife has had her car windscreen and back window smashed twice, they have had stones thrown at their window and do not let their children play out because they are called racist names.

"It's only happened in the last two years and we can't understand it. We have a lot of friends around here and very good neighbours and the children are very happy at their schools. My wife is very shaken and we're all feeling sad."

Mr Ahmed, 39, believes he will have to pay for the respray himself.

"I don't think my insurance will cover it because my last cab was smashed up by a hit-and-run driver in Openshaw and it was only replaced with this one just before Christmas," he said.

Anyone with information about the damage should contact police on 872 5050 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
