Bible competition is up to scratch

TAMESIDE Hospital's maternity unit could scoop a £7,000 windfall in a giant scratchcard competition.

Launched by the Bible Society, the contest involves entrants solving seven biblical riddles to be in with a chance to win the cash prize for a local good cause.

They can be found all over Manchester on hundreds of billboards and bus shelters, as well as on trams, buses, taxis and even beer mats.

A gigantic scratchcard reveals the answer to each riddle. The first answer was revealed on a billboard on Wellington Road, Ashton, one of seven around Greater Manchester, by midwives from Tameside Hospital using a giant 2p piece.

The word laugh completed the phrase 'Last laugh for wrinkly mum' in reference to the bible story of Sarah, who gave birth to son Isaac, one of Jesus' forebears, when her husband Abraham was 100 years old. In Hebrew, the name Isaac means 'he laughs'.

Ben Granger from the hospital said: "This is a very thought-provoking initiative from the Bible Society, and the maternity unit at Tameside Hospital are delighted to be in with a chance of benefiting from this generous fundraising opportunity."

Several hundred events, including a fashion show, theatre and community fire sculpture, will also run alongside the competition, which was launched to help people re-engage with the Bible in a positive way.
