Princess Diana car goes under hammer

A TAMESIDE auction house is auctioning off a classic car once used to chauffeur Princess Diana around.

The Jaguar Sovereign, a 1992 model in Westminster blue, is one of more than 30 vintage vehicles in the sale at Simon Charles Auctioneers in Ashton.

It is hoped its royal connections will raise up to £20,000.

The motor, described as being in mint condition, was made to order for Buckingham Palace.

It was part of the royal fleet for three years, used to drive Princess Diana around, and was even snapped by the paparazzi dropping her off at one of her engagements.

Owner Alan Verity bought the car, which has had one other owner, through a Jaguar enthusiasts' club and says it has been his pride and joy for the past decade.

Alan, a butcher in Uppermill, said: "I bought the car because of its associations with the royal family and it attracts quite a bit of attention, especially when I tell people its history.

"It's an absolutely superb drive, as you would expect.

"It takes a lot of nursing - I polish it every week and keep it in storage in the winter - but I'll be really sad to see it go."

Alan says he's selling the Jag because he's moving house and won't have enough space to keep it as well as his everyday car, a Suzuki.

But with an MG sports car, a Willys Knight and a classic Zephyr among the auction lots, the 58 year old says he might be tempted to get a replacement!

Mike Andrews, of the Nile Street auctioneers, has organised the sale which takes place today (Thursday) at 10am.

"It's rare to get something like this and we are anticipating a lot of interest," he added.
