Rugby bet wins £11k conversion

WHEN rugby union star Dean Schofield made his debut in England's defeat against South Africa on Saturday, one eagle-eyed fan was grinning all the way to the bank.

For financial adviser Ken Brown pocketed a scrummy £11,000 as the 6ft 6ins lock forward took to the field.

Ken spotted Dean's potential some years ago when he turned out for Aldwinians under 19s team - and placed a £50 bet at odds of 200/1 with William Hill that one day Dean would play for England.

He collected his winnings when the Sale Sharks man made his international debut against South Africa in Bloemfontein.

Ken, 34, from Denton, was coach of the under-19s side in Audenshaw when Dean joined having never played rugby before.

Ken said: "He was a gangly 18 year old, but he had the right physique and attitude and always wanted to learn.

"About 12 months later I placed a bet and paid the £5 tax, meaning I pocketed about £11,000.

"He's about 6ft 6in and I'm 5ft 4ins, but I like to think his success has something to do with me. When I told him about the bet he was chuffed that I had that confidence in him.

"The money isn't a life changing amount but it'll come in handy as we've just moved house. My girlfriend has spent it 10 times over already.

"I'll certainly buy Dean a drink and probably go over to watch the Rugby World Cup next year."

The only other player from the club ever to represent England was club founder Eric Evans, a Grand Slam captain 50 years ago.

Bill Thorpe, club chairman, said: "It's fantastic news Dean is playing for England because it's unusual for our junior players to make it.

"We've got a lad here now who is 18 and 6ft 11ins tall. I think I'll put £50 on him."
