Cat drowning horror

30/ 5/2007

A CAT drowned after it was deliberately thrown in a canal.

A man was spotted carrying the black cat along the towpath, next to Cavendish Mill, Ashton, on Friday night before throwing it to its death. Witnesses say the animal was definitely alive as it was seen struggling in the water. But despite the efforts of passers-by who managed to drag it onto dry land, they could not save its life.

RSPCA Inspector Vicki McDonald, who was called out by one of the witnesses, said: "Passing members of the public tried to help but sadly in vain as the cat had just passed away when I arrived. I want to thank the man who tried desperately to keep the poor cat alive as he left before I could get his name."

She added: "This animal would have suffered a terrifying, cruel and unnecessary death and I urge anyone with any information, or even the man himself, to come forward."

The offender, seen by the canal at around 10pm on Friday, is described as white, in his mid 50s and wearing a dark jacket and light-coloured baseball cap. He came from the direction of Asda and left the same way.

Anyone with information should call the RSPCA on 08705 555999.

What a dispicable person. I'm a strong believer in what goes around comes around and hopefully things like this will catch up with this man and he'll get what he deserves.

Whats wrong with people ? Just give the cat away, or hand it in to the local animal refuge. Doing a deliberate thing like that is shattering, I hope he's caught. Theres No need atall to be cruel to animals.
