Firefighters tackle major blaze

31/ 5/2007

FIRE crews from as far afield as Bolton were called to a fire in Droylsden on Tuesday.

Thick black smoke could be seen for miles as firefighters tackled the blaze at a derelict bakery on Baguley Street just after 3.30pm.

A crew from Ashton were first on the scene. They entered the building but had to withdraw when the roof and walls became unstable. The steel framework buckled under the heat of the flames which caused the roof to cave in.

A crew from Ashton has been on site since the blaze to secure its safety and a demolition crew will be knocking down one of the walls and part of the roof to make it safe.

Nobody was injured in the fire, which was tackled by around 60 firefighter. Its cause has not yet been established.
