Crowds flock to witness walk

6/ 6/2007

GLORIOUS weather made for a record turn out at Mossley Whit walks on Friday.

The town was brought to a standstill as parishioners in their finery made their way through the streets.

Onlookers stood and clapped from the side of the street as brass bands led the happy procession.

And the traditional event is so famous it even attracts guests from overseas.

"We have visitors from our twin town, Hem, in France staying in Mossley at the moment. It was a lovely day for them to take part in," said Councillor Lynn Travis.

"They enjoyed the walk and then had a game of bowls and cricket. In the evening they went to the brass band contest.

"It's a long standing tradition and a wonderful event for the community. The Mossley walks are the biggest in Tameside.

"It was a glorious day and many people turned out to take part, so it was quite spectacular."
