Anniversary tribute to island victors

TAMESIDE commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Falklands conflict with a service, parade and wreath-laying ceremony in Hyde.

Dignitaries and former servicemen pro-cessed from Greenfield Street to a service at St Thomas' Church on Lumn Road where Tameside mayor Councillor Mike Smith read a lesson.

Afterwards the parade assembled on Leigh Street for a procession at noon to the Falklands memorial service on Stockport Road. There a short service was held and wreaths laid, including one from the mayor. Guests were then invited to a buffet at Hyde Town Hall.

Alex Shaw, chairman of the Denton branch of the Royal British Legion - who carried the standard on behalf of the branch - said: "The Rev Philip Bennison of St Thomas' gave a marvellous sermon and a former Falklands serviceman also gave an address.

"About 70 people attended and the rain managed to hold off for the parade. I think more people would have attended, but for the big parade in London."
