Who's banging that drum

20/ 6/2007

THE perfect peace of a library was broken by noisy pensioners having a whale of a time.

But the ladies weren't hooligans on the fast track to acquiring an Asbo. They had permission to breach the silence rule at Haughton Green Library as they were beating the drum as part of a West African djembe drumming workshop.

Drum Roots, a Manchester-based collective which runs courses in and gives performances of the African musical form, helped run the session at the library on Mancunian Road.

In ancient African societies priestesses played the frame drum in honour of their goddesses and were regarded as wise, powerful and worthy of respect.

The session was part of the recent Adult Learners Week and was one of a series of activities organised by Tameside Libraries to spread the message that nowadays there is more going on inside libraries than reading and the taking out and returning of books.
