Close mate’s shock at death of ‘good bloke’

A CLOSE friend of dad Garry Newlove, who died after confronting a gang of youths, has spoken of his complete horror at his pal's senseless death.

Company director Mike Roscoe had known Mr Newlove for 30 years and worked with him at CF Airflow, which is based in Dukinfield.

He said workers at the Park Road ventilation firm were in shock.

"It's hit me really hard. I first heard about it on Sunday when his wife Helen phoned to tell me," he said.

"We met when he was 16 and we've been business colleagues and rivals and friends ever since, we never lost touch.

"He was your typical bloody good bloke, with a lovely wife and some lovely kids.

"He survived stomach cancer because he was too bloody-minded to let it get him when he should've died.

"Which makes it an absolute living nightmare for him to overcome what he did and then die for no reason.

"He had a bubbly personality, everybody who met him seemed to like him.

"I've had people who hadn't seen him for years calling to ask me about it. I've never seen so many people in tears.

"It's just starting to sink in."

Mr Newlove, a sales manager at a plastics company, was injured outside his home on Friday night.

He confronted a gang of youths who he saw smashing the window of a digger he was using to renovate his driveway.

He was taken to hospital but died on Sunday from a haemorrhage caused by a blow to his head.
