The Inquiry

PROBING the hundreds of deaths has proved an unprecedented task for Dame Janet Smith's inquiry team.

The final audit - which arrived on July 19, 2002 - was delayed by around four months due to the sheer size of their analysis.

Over 500 deaths were actually considered and families awaiting verdicts commented the purpose of the review was accuracy rather than speed.

IT SET itself a mammoth task. The Shipman Inquiry opened on June 20, 2001 in a bid to unravel the whole truth behind the crimes of the Hyde GP.

AS the Shipman Inquiry opened its doors, the families who fought so hard to make it public spoke of their relief it was finally underway.

AS the inquiry closed in on their Christmas recess, the number of patients under the spotlight was over 400 and still rising.

THOSE opening their newspapers on September 6, 2001 were confronted by an unusual sight.
