Church opens its doors

A HYDE vicar opened his doors to those touched by tragedy in the aftermath of the trial.

Rev Paul Stringer, at Hyde Methodist Church, offered sanctuary to people throughout proceedings at Preston Crown Court.

And with the blessing of other churches in the area we reported on February 10, 2000 how Rev Stringer says the time is right to really reach out to the community.

"Since the trial began we've set aside Tuesday evenings for anyone who feels they want to come along for whatever reason, but in light of what's happened we thought we'd publicise it more," he told us at the time.

"We're offering a place for quiet reflection, perhaps to light a candle, or talk to someone if they wish."

A district nurse and retired hospital doctor were also on hand to offer advice and support.

And he added that several members of his congregation at the church, off Union Street, in the town centre, have been deeply traumatised by the events surrounding the Hyde GP.

"We feel we want to offer the community some form of help," he added at the time."

The move was backed by the likes of Tameside Victim Support.
