Looking back
WE TAKE a stroll down memory lane to look back into Tameside's history, and to find out more about the events and people that have shaped the town throughout the 20th century.
The 1900s
AT the start of the new century, cotton was still king and provided work for many in the towns that today make up Tameside.
The 1910s
TRAGEDY struck Ashton in 1917.
The 1920s
THE war had cut Lancashire off from its overseas markets and many were never recovered.
The 1930s
HYDE really went to town with celebrations to mark their 50th anniversary of incorporation as a municipal borough.
The 1940s
EXCITEMENT surrounded Mossley in 1944 when a German Messerschmitt 109 was brought to the town after it was shot down over Liverpool.
The 1950s
THE Cold War was at its height in the 1950s - and keeping the hammer and sickle flying in Britain was Droylsden's very own red, Harry Pollitt.
