Double disappointment

12/12/2007

RICKY Hatton’s hopes of taking away another top prize were dashed 24 hours after his defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

Having made the final shortlist of 10 for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, Hatton was beaten into third place by Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and the winner, super-middleweight king Joe Calzaghe.

However, Hatton shrugged off any disappointment to pay tribute to the thousands of Brits who went Stateside.

Although some were roundly criticised for booing the American national anthem, Hatton preferred to concentrate on the positives.

He said: “I have to admit that I may have lost but the support that the fans gave me was fantastic. I’ve never known support like it from the weigh-in to the press conference to the fight.

“I may have lost but what price do you put on the support and love the fans had for me? I thank every single person, not just those who came over but those who supported Ricky Hatton. I feel proud to be British.”

Hatton's trainer Billy Graham missed out to Enzo Calzaghe for the Coach of the Year award.
