Hyde off and running

14/ 5/2008

Urmston 141ao, Hyde 142-8 - HYDE once again made life difficult for themselves last weekend against tough opposition in Urmston.

Having won the toss and invited Urmston to bat Hyde’s bowling and fielding got them into a position where they could clinch their first victory of the season.

Young and Woolley dismissed both opening batsman, including captain Landry, and leaving Urmston 9-2.

Urmston linchpin Dawood began to attack the bowling with his unorthodox style and the innings was finely balanced with only 15 overs gone at 83-2 before Dawood was caught by Duffy off Young.

With Urmston struggling at 90-4, Berry and Woods came into the attack as Hyde looked to turn the screw.

Berry bowled creditably without reward, but wickets fell at the other end as Woods finally hit his stride for the season, taking 5-33.

The visitors laboured to a conclusion as they were all out for 141, Young finishing the innings with his third wicket.

Hyde’s reply had a very nervy start as Tipper, Pilkington, Farmer and Duffy fell cheaply, leaving the scoreboard in a worrying position at 16-4.

Hyde knuckled down and tried to gain some stability but Brierley (35) was the only batsman who managed to survive the early exchanges.

Berry (57 not out) entered the fold at 49-6, at which point Hyde were second favourites but Brierley and Berry swung the game back their way before Brierley tried one shot too many.

His replacement Woolley blasted a quick 14 and the target was within their sights again as Berry and Young completed a tense two-wicket victory.

HYDE enjoyed more good fortune on Sunday as their National Knockout opponents, Huyton, withdrew from the competition, leaving them to progress to the next round unchallenged.
