Hyde hold nerve to secure hat-trick

4/ 6/2008

HYDE enjoyed a thrilling weekend which brought three victories, two of them by one run.

Friday saw them at Cheadle to replay a 20-over game abandoned 48 hours earlier with Glyn Peacock’s 65 helping them to post a competitive total of 115.

Peacock and Rob Woolley then held their nerve in the final two overs to restrict the hosts to 114.

Saturday’s league fixture against Bowden was a test for a Hyde team which had won two and drawn one of the three previous games.

Skipper James Duffy led by example for Hyde against the league leaders, hitting 134 which included 16 boundaries and three sixes.

Accompanied by Brierley (37), Duffy helped his side recover from 71-5 to eventually post 224-8 on a wicket with variable bounce, seam movement and spin.

Hey and Wilkinson started confidently in reply before Woods rewarded his skipper with the scalp of Hey (32).

Having dismissed Lancashire wicketkeeper Gareth Cross (30), Hyde were in the driving seat once Woods got rid of Wilkinson (24).

Berry (3-31) and Woods (3-38) bowled well against a strong batting line-up, reducing Bowden to 133-7 with 14 overs remaining.

With Bowden playing for the draw, Young came back to rip through the tail and give Hyde victory with Bowden 135 all out in 49 overs.

Sunday’s National Knockout Cup tie at Leyland was heavily affected by the rain which saw the game reduced to 10 overs per side.

Tipper (19) and Makin (26) pushed Hyde to a score of 76-6 from their overs before Hyde’s bowlers and fielders held their nerve during the hosts’ reply.

Tipper, Morris and Berry all took two wickets each to leave the hosts stranded on 75-8.
