Ashton 165 a.o. Walsden 166-2

18/ 6/2008

ASHTON slumped to defeat at Scott Street on Saturday, outclassed and out-performed by a solid all round display from hosts Walsden.

The home side were too strong in all departments and even though Ashton had the first chance to bat, on another decent surface, 165 all out was never going to be enough to threaten a Walsden side packed with batting talent on the smallest ground in the league.

The lion’s share of Ashton’s runs came from professional Ian Daniel with an assured half-century, but the Sri Lankan was disappointed that he did not go on and reach three figures and beyond, after being spectacularly caught on the boundary by David Blake.

Daniel was given staunch support from Kieran O’Connor who is in useful form with the bat, and the young Aussie’s 41 showed he is far more comfortable now that wickets are firming up and more akin to what he is used to in St Kilda.

Imran Yousaf and Zafar Zaman were the only other batsmen to reach double figures in a forgettable first innings display.

After the interval, Walsden’s openers killed off any hopes the Ashton bowlers had of causing an upset by staging a 42 run stand that set the foundations for the home side to cruise to victory.

Anchored by the experience of Mark Hooson (55) and the explosive hitting of the in-form James Rawlinson (23), the other Sri Lankan on display, home professional Janeka Gunaratne finished on 71 not out to end the contest at a canter.

ON Sunday Ashton lost by seven wickets against Milnrow. Ashton were all out for 129, the only partnership of note was a 60 run effort between Jon Selby (40) and Kieran O’Connor (48no).
