West keep pace with leaders

18/ 6/2008

DENTON West eased past local rivals Dukinfield on Saturday as they kept up the pressure on the leaders in the Lancashire county league.

After winning the toss and inserting his opposite number Dave Gandy, Gareth Senior saw his bowlers put in a quality display with the wickets shared out.

Scott Kirwin and Dave Letvenski started the ball rolling picking up three between them to reduce the hosts to 30 for 3.

Ex Dukinfield warhorse Paul Turner and Jason Stringer then chipped in with three a piece, aided and abetted by the agility and silky glovework of youngster David Ashworth.  This left Dukinfield reeling at 60 for 6 and with West also fielding well and Duki Pro Robinson run out the innings was wrapped up quickly the hosts limping to 107 all out.

After sampling this season’s finest tea to date the West heavyweights went about the reply with their usual appetite, reaching 40 before Skipper Senior (17) departed, bowled by Salman Butt. Dennis Kirwin then joined McAllister and the pair added to their growing reputations with some blistering strokes, Kirwin top-scoring with 45 and Jon Mac 40.

The five points safely tucked away West march on.

Sunday saw West make the trip over to Bury to take on the Bolton Association’s pace setters Walshaw in a spicy Lancashire Knock-out second round clash. The West lads grabbed the win in the very last over.

West batted first and Skipper Senior made 89 and McAllister again impressed with 40. Wickets fell regularly but West reached a very defendable 218 off their allotted 45 overs.  In reply Jordy Williams grabbed a vital brace with Turner and Stringer causing the batsmen problems the hosts started to struggle at 150 for 5 with 10 left.

Lusty blows from the hosts tail set up a nail- biting finale in which Kirwin clean bowled Walshaw’s Taylor. Walshaw were all out for 211, sending West sailing into a next round tie against Staley at Windsor Park.
