DROYLSDEN gained a much needed victory in a tense, low scoring contest against Glodwick at Oakfield on Saturday.
Occasional bowler Mike Schofield was the hero, taking a career best seven wickets for 53 runs.
Glodwick skipper Mark Parkinson won the toss and did not hesitate in inserting the opposition on what was a damp-looking wicket. The Droylsden openers progressed steadily however and had reached 53 when the Goldwick professional Imran Aslam dismissed Schofield for 15.
A mixture of fine bowling and poor shot selection saw the home side collapse to 125 all out, probably thinking they were at least 30 or 40 runs short of a competitive total.
Enter Schofield. The visitors had no answer to him and when their main batting hope Aslam was brilliantly caught by Mike Ratcliffe for 25, the writing was on the wall.
Schofield was ably assisted by Pervez Shah (2-30) at the other end and the Oldhamers were 107 all out. Stayley, were unable to chase down Austerlands’ score of 284-7 in which Donwell Hector struck 92 and Adam Young chipped in with 72.
Although Rafiq made 102 and Stephen Bird 59, they were eventually dismissed for 237.
