Captain's example proves in vain

Honley 236-6, Micklehurst 228-7 - MICKLEHURST lost by eight runs in a nailbiting finale to last Saturday’s match against the Drakes Huddersfield League Premier Division leaders.

Yet another Saturday game in this miserable summer had play delayed by rain with the match reduced to 40 overs per side as a result.

Honley batted first and their batsmen soon began to dominate the home attack.

Greaves cruised to 114 and Cox contributed 55 as Honley amassed a formidable total of 236-6.

None of the Micklehurst bowlers were able to cope with the damp conditions, Dennis Lonergan the most successful with 3-57.

Micklehurst’s reply looked as if it was going to fall well short when Lonergan was the third man out, dismissed for 35 with their score on 79.

However, the middle order of Rashid (36), Lilley (19) and Austin (24) joined forces with skipper Tom Whittle (45 not out) to bring the game to a thrilling climax with 24 runs required from two overs.

Unfortunately for Micklehurst, the Honley fielders were able to prevent Whittle from facing most of those 12 deliveries and the game was eventually lost by eight runs.
